Bright Star
by Steve Martin
In our high school program, first year musical theatre students are required to do tech for the black box musical production. I had been a sound technician for several shows, and I wanted to branch out and try something new. The Bright Star production was the first show that I had the opportunity to hang, operate, and design lights. It was a huge learning experience for me through which I developed an appreciation for lighting design.
Once the lights were hung, I spent time with our director, Matthew Peters, programming and blocking the show. I programmed color washes into the design to implement color archetypes and color themes into my design.
One of the more memorable lighting elements of the show was the string lights that were hung throughout the black box. I used the string lights to highlight moments of happiness and optimism in the story and provide an even more intimate feel to the show in the already very intimate space.
My experience in Bright Star ignited my new passion in the area lighting design and was awarded Best Lighting Design at our end of year award ceremony.
